Head of Communications.


The Senior Communications Officer contributes to developing communications plans on specific advocacy files on climate and energy, air quality, chemicals and pesticides, and coordinates their execution. They are also responsible for leading HEAL’s digital media communication activities, which include strategically managing HEAL’s website(s) and social media channels.

Communications strategy

  • Contribute to developing HEAL’s communications plans on specific advocacy files and topics, in cooperation with the Head of Communications, and coordinate their execution;

  • Contribute to developing and implementing HEAL’s overall communications strategy and plans, together with the other members of the Communications team;

  • Coordinate with external designers to develop and maintain a coherent visual identity and branding, and ensure consistent use, in close cooperation with the Head of Communications.

Digital media

  • Develop and implement HEAL’s digital media strategy in alignment with the overall communications strategy;

  • Manage HEAL’s website(s) and ensure that they are maintained, updated and further developed to meet the needs of the organisation;

  • Manage HEAL’s social media profiles and further build HEAL’s online presence;

  • Regularly run detailed analytics on HEAL’s web and social media presence, and recommend actions to improve reach and impact.

Content creation

  • Create high-quality written and visual content for HEAL’s online and offline communications channels;

  • Edit and quality control content created by other members of HEAL’s communications and advocacy teams, with a view to effectively translate science to accessible policy and public messages;

  • Support public speaking engagements of HEAL directors and programme leads.

Organisational development

  • Help foster a continuous learning environment at HEAL;

  • Contribute to HEAL’s fundraising efforts and support HEAL in meeting its reporting obligations on communications activities;

  • Participate actively in HEAL meetings and HEAL general assembly;

  • Support with organising online and in-person events (e.g. membership engagement or other webinars, general assembly meetings.


Required skills, knowledge and experience

  • Postgraduate qualification or equivalent experience in communications, digital media, media studies or any other relevant field;

  • At least 5 years of experience in a digital communications role;

  • Experience maintaining an organisation’s website using WordPress and/or Drupal (uploading content, ensuring content is up-to-date, liaising with web developer for technical support, etc.);

  • Experience creating analytics reports (e.g. Google Analytics for websites) and drawing insights from them;

  • Experience creating different types of engaging and impactful content for an organisation’s social media presence on a variety of social media channels (including X, Facebook, and LinkedIn);

  • Experience of successfully delivering communications strategies and publication plans targeting different audiences through different communications channels;

  • Native level English writing skills, with the ability to convey information in a compelling and concise way and to re-package complex or technical content in an accessible format;

  • Strong project-management skills and attention to detail;

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to engage with, and influence others across a team and organisation;

  • Demonstrable experience of working well in multi-disciplinary/cross-functional team;

  • Excellent computer, IT skills (including Microsoft 365 products);

  • Excellent knowledge of design programmes such as Adobe Creative Suite and Canva;

  • Commitment to HEAL’s values and mission.

Desirable skills, knowledge and experience

  • Good understanding of environmental health issues;

  • Robust knowledge of the EU regulatory processes;

  • Experience in events planning and organisation;

  • Knowledge of additional European language.


You’ll join a friendly and supportive team of passionate change leaders. We’re based in Brussels in a beautiful office at Mundo Madou, an ethical building located in the heart of the city.

  • A gross salary of around 3,800 EUR per month;
