We are looking for a Research Scientist who is passionate and innovative to join us in our Spatial Biology, Histology and Image Analysis for Neurodegenerative Diseases team, based in Braine, Belgium.

ABOUT THE ROLE:

The neuroscience department at UCB is searching for a highly motivated scientist with extensive experience in spatial biology and brain histology to join our team working on drug discovery in the field of neurodegeneration.

The selected candidate will actively participate in the identification of new targets and the development of therapeutics to treat neurodegenerative diseases and epilepsy. The main role of this position is to supervise spatial biology, immunohistochemistry and image analysis studies to characterize in vivo models and assess drug efficacy.

WHO YOU WILL WORK WITH:

Reporting to the Head of Neuroimaging, you will have regular interactions with technicians and researchers from different departments within UCB, as well as with external organizations, to organize studies and ensure their completion.

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

  • Conducting spatial biology research (transcriptomic, proteomic, high plex in situ hybridization) on brain sections using a recently implemented advanced platform;

  • Performing immunohistochemistry on brain sections, high-throughput image acquisitions using different microscopy instruments, and image analyses using advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence;

  • Interpreting data and reporting results in an organized and timely manner;

  • Performing other duties as required and assigned.


EDUCATION,EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:

  • Engineer, or Ph.D. in molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry, or a related field with up to 2 years of post-graduate training;

  • Expertise in spatial biology, spatial data analysis, and programming in Python/R is required;

  • Expertise in microscopy, widefield or confocal, is required;

  • Knowledge in neuroscience and neuroanatomy is preferred (rodent, monkey, or human brain);

  • Expertise in immunohistochemistry (fluorescent, colorimetric) and general knowledge in the field of histology with at least 2 years of experience;

  • Expertise in microscopy, widefield or confocal, is required;

  • Knowledge of image analysis software (Halo, Visiopharm, ImageJ, Q-Path) is an advantage. Good use of Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint) is essential;

  • Ability to critically analyze data, troubleshoot problems, and seek solutions with minimal oversight;

  • Ability to independently learn and rapidly integrate novel technologies;

  • Strong analytical and statistical capabilities.
