DESCRIPTION:
The Odysseus Academic Network is recruiting a young graduate or professional with a legal background to fill a remunerated traineeship position as Research and Project Assistant in the framework of a contract for vocational training (convention d’immersion professionnelle) under Belgian law. The position will be based in Brussels (no remote work in principle) at the Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB). As Odysseus is a university network, applicants interested in academia are strongly encouraged to apply. The traineeship will start on September 15, 2025 and last for 6 months with a possible extension of 6 months max for non-Belgian citizens. The trainee will work as part of a team of three to four persons.

TASKS:
The Research and Project Assistant’s role involves the following tasks:
- Coordinating the Odysseus Network blog: managing, reading and editing weekly posts, including liaising with contributors, publishing content online, carrying out related promotional activities;
- Contributing to the organisation of the Odysseus Network events;
- Drafting the Odysseus Network newsletter;
- Following closely on a weekly basis the development of the case law of the Court of Justice of the EU;
- Supporting the development of online databases, including the compilation of EU legislation on immigration and asylum (research, classification);
- Help managing the Network’s social media accounts, in particular Facebook, Bluesky, Instagram, Youtube and LinkedIn;
- Any other task related to the activities of the Network.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Applicants should possess the following qualifications:
- Master’s degree in (EU) law (other disciplines such as political science, international relations, European studies will be considered but priority will be given to lawyers) with excellent marks;
- Knowledge of and interest in EU law and policies on migration and asylum;
- Excellent knowledge of spoken and written English. Proficiency in French is an asset;
- Knowledge of ICT is an asset, in particular WordPress, Canva, Brevo and social media platforms;
- Ability to learn how e-learning programmes function;
- Ability to be proactive, plan and work autonomously;
- Ability to communicate clearly, easily and quickly.
WHAT WE OFFER:
- A first valuable professional experience during which you will accomplish diverse tasks with a certain autonomy and under weekly supervision in a multinational team and network;
- Monitoring of daily developments in EU migration and asylum law regarding legislation, case law and policy;
- In case time allows, write and publish a blog post with the help of a member of the Odysseus Network;
- Learn in case with some help provided by the team how to update a website and run WordPress;
- Represent from time to time the Odysseus Network at meetings (for instance NGOs coordination) or events (hearings in the European Parliament, workshops organised by think tanks, UNHCR, etc);
- Attend to the summer school of 2026 for free;
- Liaise with the members of the Odysseus Network who are among the best academics specialised on EU Migration and Asylum Law in Europe;
- Live and work in the capital of Europe while benefiting from all facilities offered by the ULB (libraries, restaurant, sport, medical service, etc).
Moreover
- Participate for free in events organised by the Odysseus Network;
- Possibility to follow every week the course of Philippe De Bruycker on EU Migration and Asylum Law given in English if your traineeship takes place during the 2nd semester of the academic year;
- If you wish to do so outside working hours, supervision to prepare a legal paper for publication in a scientific journal;
- For high academic performers (meaning you have been among the 10 to 15% of the best students having the highest results during most of your studies), help to prepare a project for a PhD by defining a subject and support as much as possible to find funding in the EU.
