COMPANY DESCRIPTION:

Enabel is the Belgian agency for international cooperation. With our partners, we develop ideas and implement projects addressing urgent global challenges, such as climate change, social and economic inequalities, demographic trends, peace and security.

We have over 25 years' experience in areas ranging from education, health care and social protection, food systems, environmental protection and biodiversity, economic development and employment, financial and administrative governance... The Belgian government, the European Union, several financial partners, the governments of other countries and the private sector call on Enabel's expertise. We also work with public departments, research institutes and civil society organisations to enable meaningful social change.

With 2,500 staff, Enabel manages more than 200 projects in more than twenty countries, in Europe, Africa and the Middle East.

CONTEXT:

Enabel is looking for a motivated Intern to join the Enabel Innovation Hub team and contribute to an impact study of projects supported by Enabel during the Wehubit programme (60%) and for supporting the Enabel Innovation Expert in her daily work (40%). This is an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in impact evaluation, social innovation, and Digital for Development (D4D) within an international cooperation context.

ABOUT THE WEHUBIT PROGRAMME AND THE INNOVATION UNIT:

  • The Wehubit programme, was an initiative of Enabel, who champions social innovation and Digital for Development in partner countries. Its core objectives included boosting digital social innovation, accelerating inclusive and sustainable development, and increasing access to digital solutions that improve living conditions in developing and emerging countries. Wehubit achieves this through two key mechanisms: financing and supporting partner projects via grants and facilitating knowledge exchange and brokering partnerships through initiatives like the Knowledge Exchange Network (KEN);

  • The Innovation Unit serves as Enabel’s internal centre of expertise in innovation. Strategically, it shapes the organization's innovation agenda; operationally, it supports projects in the design and implementation of innovative approaches.

The Impact Study: Purpose and Objectives

This impact study is a direct response to key findings from a recent external evaluation of the Wehubit programme. While the evaluation recognized Wehubit's unique position and effectiveness in accelerating the middle phases of scaling digital social innovations, it also highlighted areas for improvement. The primary objectives of this impact study are to:

  • Evaluate the Current Scaling Stage of Wehubit-Funded Projects;

  • Examine the Sustainability of Project Outcomes;

  • Assess the Effectiveness of the Support Provided by the Wehubit Program;

  • Provide Actionable Recommendations for Future Programming.

Support to the Enabel Innovation Unit

  • Support in the organization of the innovation week;

  • Support on the development of an innovation toolbox for colleagues.

YOUR ROLE:

You will play a supporting role in all phases of this comprehensive impact study, with the support and coaching of the Enabel Innovation Expert and the Enabel Innovation Team. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Data Collection Support: Assisting with surveys, organizing interviews, and reviewing project documentation from Wehubit-funded projects across 12 countries;

  • Research and Analysis: Contributing to the application of established scaling frameworks (e.g., IDEA Scaling Pathway, OECD DAC Guidance on Scaling Development Outcomes) to assess project maturity and progress;

  • Report Development: Supporting the drafting of key study outputs, including the inception report, draft and final reports, executive summary, and presentations of findings;

  • Logistical Coordination: Assisting with outreach to Wehubit-funded projects for participation confirmation and data collection consent.

REQUIREMENTS:
