ABOUT THE EUROPEAN HEAT PUMP SECTOR:

Around 42% of the energy we use in Europe goes on heating. This mainly still comes from imported and expensive fossil fuels. Fortunately, there is a proven solution: in buildings, industry or as part of large-scale district heating infrastructure, the heat pump can replace fossil fuels. Heat pumps use natural energy - making them renewable - plus a tiny amount of additional energy, normally electricity. This makes them amazingly efficient. To achieve energy independence and a sustainable energy system in line with the EU’s net zero emissions target, we need heat pumps. The EU aims to have 60 million heat pumps in Europe by 2030. Today, heat pumps provide heating to 24 million European households and cooling to many millions more. Heat pumps need to become the default technology for all heating appliances in the next few years if we are to achieve our energy security and climate ambitions. Policy and awareness-raising are therefore a core part of the work of the European Heat Pump Association.
