EIT Climate-KIC (Knowledge and Innovation Community) is Europe’s foremost climate innovation initiative, entrusted by the European Commission to catalyse transformation through innovation. Headquartered in Amsterdam, with circa 160 people distributed all over the EU, EIT Climate-KIC leads and orchestrates innovation with a community of more than 400. Together we conduct activities in 39 countries. We partner with cities, regions, governments and communities with the highest climate action ambition; providing the framework and expert support to holistically manage the complexity of climate change and deliver accelerated climate action.

EIT Climate-KIC operates as a not-for-profit platform working through public-private partnership, wielding both public and private funding. We consist of 3 Legal entities: a Dutch BV Holding company (for profit) with 14 branches in European jurisdictions, providing grant management, innovation orchestration services, and impact investment advisory owned by a Dutch-based foundation with charity status – Climate-KIC International Foundation. Historically, we have been funded by our founder and core funder, the European Institute for Innovation and Technology (EIT), but we are currently transitioning to a multi-funder model.

ABOUT THE ROLE:

In this role, as a member of the Resilient and Climate Neutral Regions Cluster, you will co- lead the implementation of programmes aiming to transform forest management and associated value chains in order to maximize their climate and biodiversity impacts. More specifically, the objective is to contribute to the development of international programmes on holistic and systemic approaches that maximize carbon removals and sequestration in the forests, and the storage of carbon in long-lived products.

We are seeking an individual with extensive experience leading and designing programmes in the forestry and bio-based materials domain, having solid experience in project delivery and management, and capable of working in multiple partner environments. This role will require an innovative person, at ease with complexity and systemic approaches, and a thought leader in the domain.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Strategy, learning and knowledge management

  • Co-lead and design the strategic orientation of the forestry and biobased systems theme within the cluster, ensuring that the theme builds on past learnings and is driven by learning;

  • Provide technical advice to other Climate-KIC project teams working on forestry and biobased projects, ensuring that synergies between projects are built or strengthened;

  • Lead on learning and sensemaking to extract relevant insights from projects and feed into future strategic design.


Business development, proposal development and project delivery

  • Develop and implement acquisition strategies for securing large-scale, multi-year programmes in forestry and bio-based systems;

  • Lead the preparation and development of high-quality project proposals, targeting public and private funders, including philanthropies, foundations and climate/development funding institutions (World Bank, GEF, GCF, etc);

  • Establish project delivery consortiums with key national and international actors;

  • Collaborate closely with the team to identify and pursue growth opportunities for forestry and biobased systems, emphasising multi-funder and blended finance mechanisms;

  • Lead project implementation and ensure that projects are delivered on time and according to donor requirements;

  • Work closely with project teams to monitor project progress, maintain relationships with delivery partners and donors, and manage project delivery risks.


Partnerships and external engagement

  • Lead external engagement with key stakeholders in forestry and biobased systems, build relationships with strategically relevant actors in the space and identify potential partners;

  • Lead on thought leadership and visibility of programme results (writing articles, publications and other relevant activities);

  • Contribute to organizing events fostering collaboration and shared learning, with a particular focus on partnership building, sharing our insights and acquisition;

  • Translate (scientific) findings to policy frameworks, translating complex data into actionable policy recommendations for relevant stakeholders.

  • Project partners and funders, from research, consultancies, philanthropies, private sector companies;

ABOUT YOU:

The successful candidate would be passionate about and committed to supporting climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts in sector of the forestry and associated value chains (e.g. wood sector), with an appetite for holistic and system thinking. The candidate would have the ambition to learn, grow, and develop within the team. 

To be successful in this role you will be an active team player with a can-do attitude and have strong self-management capabilities to achieve impactful results.

Qualifications and experience

  • Minimum 8 years post-study professional experience in programme design and delivery in forestry and biobased systems;

  • Proven track record of project development and implementation of multi-funder projects (EC, governments, foundations, etc) with multiple delivery partners;

  • Previous experience in strategy design, programme monitoring and learning within forestry and/or biobased systems;

  • A profound understanding of concepts, challenges, and effective intervention strategies in forestry value chains and systems, with previous experience working with value chain actors and/or relevant government departments;

  • Extensive experience in project management, proposal development and partnerships;

  • Good knowledge of funding opportunities, in particular experience with securing funding from private funders or government departments;

  • Full fluency in English, with outstanding communication skills.


Other Desirable Experience and Knowledge Requirements

  • Knowledge of another European language(s);

  • Experience working in the global south, and/or practical field experience in the forestry sector;

  • Experience building concepts or frameworks from scratch and in elaborating them through use of learning;

  • Demonstrated interest and success in working remotely within a geographically spread team.


Skills

  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills;

LOCATION:

Candidates must have the right to work in the location they’re applying for (I.e. not require visa sponsorship) prior to applying for the position. Ideally, the successful candidate will be based close to one of the EIT Climate KIC offices, but we support fully remote or hybrid forms of working and offer a high degree of flexibility.
