Friends of the Earth Europe (FoEE) campaigns at the heart of Europe for sustainable and just societies and for the protection of the environment. We are the largest grassroots environmental network in Europe, uniting 31 national organisations with thousands of local groups as part of Friends of the Earth International. Our vision is of a peaceful and sustainable world, founded on social, economic, racial, gender and environmental justice and free from all forms of domination and exploitation.

We are looking for a Corporate Accountability Campaigner who will work as a member of the Economic Justice team. The contract will initially be for a period of 12 months with the intention to make it permanent, starting in June 2024 and based in the FoEE office in Brussels. This is an excellent opportunity to be part of an environmental justice NGO working at the European level and a vibrant European network.

FoEE has been campaigning on corporate accountability for over 15 years. The last years we have focussed on EU’s Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD) and the UN Treaty on Business and Human Rights. In the next years, we will continue to work on the transposition and implementation of CSDDD but we will also initiate campaigns to work with and support CSOs and communities affected by EU companies in areas such as critical raw materials and extractive industries. Our work will go beyond advocacy and include public mobilisation, exposing corporate abuse and targeting companies and investors. We plan to explore new tactics in our case work, ranging from litigation to exposing greenwashing.

For this position we are looking for an organised, creative, energetic, and motivated individual. You will be part of a team of two campaigners working on corporate accountability, and you will have a broad range of responsibilities, including developing positions and strategies, and implementing them by organising concrete activities and events. You will be working in coalitions, and involving groups at the national level in our campaign.

You will work closely together with colleagues in the Economic Justice (EJ) program who are each responsible for one of the three areas of our team: (1) trade and investment, (2) corporate accountability, and (3) corporate capture and fossil free politics. As part of your position, you will engage with colleagues in other FoEE programs working on energy, climate, food, agriculture, critical raw materials, etc. Your line-manager is the coordinator of the Economic Justice team.

  • Contribute to developing strategies for the Corporate Accountability campaign;

  • Develop and deliver activities, events and materials that contribute to campaign aims and strategies (examples of activities: stunts, reports, actions, public debates, speakers tours, etc);

  • Commission and/or develop research that, among others, highlights corporate abuses and their negative impacts on society;

  • Advocate our key messages and proposals with relevant stakeholders at EU and national level, including the European Parliament, the Commission, and the Council;

  • Engage and coordinate Friends of the Earth member groups and other organisations in our campaigns and develop alliances with key external groups;

  • Develop, in cooperation with our Communications team, accessible communication tools (including social media) that allow for increased public involvement;

  • Organise campaign meetings and contribute to organising our yearly EJ programme meeting;

  • Manage administrative and finance matters related to the campaign and keep track of budget expenditures;

  • Contribute to fundraising and reporting to funders;

  • Develop good relations with media and be spokesperson on relevant topics;

  • Contribute to the development of strategies of the Economic Justice program;

  • Contribute to the development of the Friends of the Earth Europe organization (staff meetings, trainings, overall strategic prioritization, etc.).

  • Strong commitment to, and passion to match, the values, vision, and mission of Friends of the Earth Europe;

  • 3-5 years of experience in working with an NGO at national, European, or international level;

  • 2-3 years of experience in managing campaigns including the various responsibilities involved (such as fundraising and reporting, research, planning, lobbying, communications);

  • Experience in dealing with stakeholders from different backgrounds: NGOs, FoEE member groups, activists and grassroots groups, global South partners, lobbyists, researchers, media, influencers, politicians, etc.;

  • Experience in managing, planning, and delivering projects, events, and bigger activities, including proven ability to adjust plans to rapidly changing circumstances;

  • Track-record of activities that show an understanding of economic justice and corporate accountability issues;

  • Experience in exposing and challenging corporations involved in human rights abuses;

  • Knowledge of how EU institutions and policy making work;

  • Good oral and written communication skills in English;

  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team;

  • Motivation to exchange with and learn from colleagues;

  • Ability to think out of the box and find new ways to campaign;

  • Ability to attend evening/weekend meetings and undertake travel.

The position is offered as an 80-100% position in Brussels, Belgium for a period of twelve months. It can be made permanent, subject to satisfactory performance and available funding. We offer a salary between €3,733 and €4,436 gross (for 100%), depending on a competency assessment.

FoEE offers an attractive benefits package, including a 13th month salary, lunch vouchers, an additional 5 days of holidays per year, pension scheme, hospitalisation and comprehensive travel insurance.
