DESCRIPTION:
ABOUT THE ROLE:
We have a great opportunity to join ClientEarth’s Brussels office in a coordination role. Our work in the EU has grown to such an extent that we need support maintaining an overall view of everything we are doing, to ensure we are working in line with our strategic framework.
You will support the Head of the Brussels in monitoring the adoption of EU environmental policies and in coordinating our work at EU level to ensure we work cross-programmatically, collaborate with our offices in other geographies, and make the most of our expertise and skills across the whole organisation.
MEET YOUR MANAGER:
In this role, you will be managed by Anais Berthier who is based in our Brussels office. Anais is a Senior Lawyer and Head of ClientEarth Brussels. She provides strategic direction, coordination and oversight of our work engaging with the EU institutions and other vital stakeholders. Anaïs has worked for law firms in France and in Belgium, including Huglo-Lepage & Associés, handling issues on a wide range of European law matters including waste, chemicals (including on the REACH Regulation), facilities’ permits, environmental liability and climate change. Before moving to Brussels, she worked as a lawyer for the French Ministry of the Environment, where she focused on Kyoto Protocol and World Trade Organisation (WTO) issues. Before becoming Head of EU Affairs at ClientEarth she led our work on strengthening the rule of law. This included ensuring the implementation and enforcement of the procedural rights provided by the Aarhus Convention: access to information, public participation in decision-making process and access to justice in environmental matters.
MAIN DUTIES:
JOB PURPOSE:
ClientEarth is a legal and environmental charity that uses the power of the law to fight against climate change and to protect nature and the environment. We have offices in Europe (including the UK), the US and China and currently have approximately 300 staff worldwide.
This is a great opportunity to join ClientEarth’s Brussels office in a coordination role. Our work in the EU has grown to such an extent that we need support maintaining an overall view of everything we are doing, to ensure we are working in line with our strategic framework. You will work closely with the Head of Brussels/Associate Director for the EU (hereinafter “Head of Brussels”) and provide administrative support to this colleague as well as to the Head of Spain and Mediterranean (based in Madrid).
You will also provide support with research related to advocacy, communications and programme coordination to support a wide range of colleagues seeking to ensure that EU law and policy rise to the environmental challenges facing us and, in particular, that the EU fulfils its Treaty obligation to integrate environmental protection into all its policies and activities. You will support the Head of the Brussels in monitoring the adoption of EU environmental policies and in coordinating our work at EU level to ensure we work cross-programmatically, collaborate with our offices in other geographies, and make the most of our expertise and skills across the whole organisation.
On a typical day, you would, for example, take notes at meetings attended by our Head of Brussels; use those notes to update our internal tools for maintaining information; support our Head of Brussels with calendar management; provide similar support to our Head of Spain and Mediterranean; carry out research on the latest developments in EU policy; support legal experts in carrying out essential projectmanagement tasks to take forward their litigation and advocacy; and coordinate with colleagues in Berlin, London, Madrid, and Warsaw. Your “team” will be both quite small – working directly with our Head of Brussels and Head of Spain and Mediterranean – and large, working with some 60 colleagues involved in work at EU level.
Our Brussels office is our second largest. Its work focuses on the decision-making processes at EU institutional level which implies both litigation and advocacy work with all relevant stakeholders at EU level including EU institutions, agencies and bodies; NGOs and industry representatives. The office currently has over 55 staff from all European programmes within the organisation (Energy Systems Transport & Materials, and Food Systems, Ocean, & Land Use), including Heads and Leads of Programmes, project officers as well as a number of colleagues from our support functions including HR, Operations and Finance.
WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:
As Coordination Officer, you will report to the Head of the Brussels office. You will also have close working relationships with a wide range of other ClientEarth staff in the Brussels office, as well as colleagues in other offices, including the Head of Spain and Mediterranean, the Programme Management Group Lead, and other heads, leads and lawyers working in Europe.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Note: We anticipate an approximate 80/20 split between supporting the Head of Brussels and the Head of Spain and Mediterranean.
