COMPANY DESCRIPTION:

The NGO Shipbreaking Platform is a global coalition of environmental, human rights and labour organisations that works to prevent the illegal trade of toxic end-of-life ships from wealthy shipping companies and nations to some of the most vulnerable communities and ecosystems in South Asia. After over a decade of successful campaigning, the Platform has achieved significant progress including new legislation at the EU level; criminal liability for ship owners; and investor divestment from irresponsible companies. Now, the Platform is looking to build up stronger capacity to effectively promote solutions in light of ongoing European Union policy discussions on Circular Economy.

We are looking for a creative full-time Communications Officer to support the scaling up of our campaign aimed at boosting innovative and sustainable business practices, and can offer a flexible, stimulating and multicultural working environment. The role requires excellent writing skills, a strong understanding of environmental waste and recycling policies, and the ability to develop engaging content for different audiences.

MAIN TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop, lead and implement communications strategies for increased visibility of the Platform’s work on policy related to circular economy, waste management and material recovery;

  • Monitor and analyse relevant policy developments at the EU and international levels, and support the Platform in identifying new opportunities to increase campaign impact;

  • Develop engaging and compelling content (written and visual), and campaign messages for the Platform’s website, social media channels, and publications based on robust data and evidence to inform relevant policy-makers and industry stakeholders;

  • Pitch news stories, identify and maintain contact with relevant journalists, respond to media requests and draft press releases;

  • Edit policy briefings, reports and position papers;

  • Coordinate the production of communication material with external suppliers;

  • Assist in organising external events.

CANDIDATE PROFILE:

  • University-level degree in communication, journalism, political science, environmental policy, or a related field;

  • Experience in communication strategy development, content creation and social media management;

  • Strong understanding of EU institutions and environmental policies (especially related to circular economy, waste hierarchy, industrial decarbonisation strategies);

  • Excellent writing and editing skills in English (native-speaker level);

  • Ability to translate complex policy and technical issues into accessible language for different audiences;

  • Knowledge of graphic design tools and/or audio-visual storytelling is an asset;

  • Able to work autonomously as well as within a team;

  • Strong commitment to the environmental and human rights objectives of the NGO Shipbreaking Platform.

CONDITIONS:

  • Location – Brussels office, occasional international travel required;

  • Full-time, one-year contract with possibilities of renewal;

  • Competitive NGO salary corresponding to level of experience and skills;

  • Pension scheme and meal vouchers;

  • Starting date ASAP.

HOW TO APPLY:

  • Interested candidates should send a letter of motivation in English, Curriculum Vitae and contact information for references by email to the following address: info@shipbreakingplatform.org;

  • Application deadline is 31 August 2025;

  • Please note that only applicants with the existing right to work in Belgium will be considered;

  • Date for interviews with selected candidates: Second week of September 2025 in Brussels or via video call.

Due to restricted capacity, only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. Therefore if you have not heard from us by 5 September 2025, please assume your application has been unsuccessful at this time.
