PURPOSE OF THE JOB:
The Greenpeace International Programme Department provides vision, strategic direction, coordination and support to the global Greenpeace network in the development and delivery of an ambitious and impactful Global Programme that inspires, mobilises and engages millions of people to campaign alongside us. The Greenpeace International Programme Department enhances the Greenpeace network's programme performance, cohesion and alignment with emphasis on impact critical National and Regional Greenpeace Organisations (NROs).

This is a co-leadership position, with the two Co-Heads delivering the overall objectives of Story & Communications, building deep collaboration between peers, GPI Programme teams and key NRO and external stakeholders to create a stronger Global Programme, GP Network and global movement for change.

The purpose of this role is to:
- Lead and manage the design and development of Story and Communications strategies and tactics to support the delivery of an impactful Global Programme;
- Provide cross-functional and strategic leadership to the Story and Comms team of teams, covering comms hubs, media library, digital, internal and influencer communications, story advisors and communications strategists;
- Lead the engagement of Story and Comms staff with colleagues in the International Programme, Fundraising and Tech teams to ensure Greenpeace has a coherent, inspiring organisational story that enables a compelling story driven programme and collective brand proposition and promise;
- Oversee the effective management of Greenpeace International’s channels, communications tools and communities of practices to support an impactful Global Programme.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:
Story & Communications
- Lead and manage the design and development of impactful, people powered story and communications strategies and tactics in line with Greenpeace’s Global Programme;
- Ensure alignment of Story and Communications work with the overall Global Programme Plan;
- Ensure Greenpeace has a coherent, inspiring organisational story that enables a compelling story driven programme and collective brand proposition and promise;
- Ensure the development and implementation of functional strategies for areas of expertise, including the articulation and integration of our global Greenpeace story into all overall programme strategies. And ensure innovative communication tactics are developed and deployed;
- Ensure Greenpeace International's own digital audience is inspired, invited and engaged through a digitally mature, channel strategy and tactics;
- Ensure effective strategic communications approaches for critical incidents and crisis communications, including representation in the Greenpeace International Crisis Management Team.
International Programme Leadership
Together with the Programme Directors and other Programme (co-)heads, contribute to the development and delivery of the overall Global Programme Plan by building and managing an integrated programme approach:
- Ensure a collaborative approach with other Functional Programme Teams: Operations, and, Political, Science and Research;
- Ensure a collaborative approach to the alignment of campaigns, engagement and operations across the Integrated Programme Teams.
Stakeholder Management
Create and strengthen the GP Network:
- Strengthen, support and co-create with NRO program leads and project leaders in the global Story and Communications and Engagement communities;
- Provide staff and supporters (current & prospective) with inspirational visions of a world governed to restore and sustain the global commons and in support of and promotion of global common good;
- Foster communities of practice across the Global network for story, comms and visual storytelling;
- Build and maintain strong working relationships with key allies and strategic partners to align the strategy and maximise the impact of the global movement;
- Facilitate the resolution of conflicts over dates and channels between global projects;
- Facilitate NRO-NRO collaboration especially in the Global South;
- Foster dialogue and smart risk-taking.
People Management
Line and task manage a team of teams (Story & Communications brings together several existing units):
- Lead, manage and develop a multidisciplinary team of unit heads covering story, communications strategists, communication hubs, media library, digital, and internal and influencer communications;
- Support unit heads with the line and task management of their teams;
- Task manage staff members from other areas of the International Programme Department who are allocated to the Story and Communications team for specific tasks and/or cross cutting projects;
- Ensure the effective performance of these employees through objective setting, performance reviews, coaching, training and development in order to enable the achievement of the objectives of Operations.
Financial Management
Financial planning and management of internal resources in order to ensure cost effectiveness and strategic expenditure of allocated funds:
- Ensure the effective budgeting, management and expenditure of internal resources: staff and operational budgets, investments in fixed assets;
- Ensure the effective budgeting, management and distribution of ad hoc funds allocated to Story and Communications.
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
- Significant (7 years +) senior story and communications leadership experience, of which a minimum 4 years leading international teams;
- Highly experienced strategist –ability to anticipate developments, spot opportunities and lead the story and comms community to continually learn and evolve strategically and tactically;
- A track record of delivering effective, audience centric, communication strategies and tactical delivery against a backdrop of a constantly evolving media landscape;
- Experience in organisational identity and brand strategy development and delivery;
- Deep understanding of the storytelling approach, tools and techniques;
- Experience in working with multicultural staff and teams and across borders and time zones and with a wide variety of views;
- Experience with co-leadership and collaborative management preferrable;
- Experience in implementing and bringing about significant positive changes in work culture, practices and performance;
- Experience in building exceptional teams;
- Experience in critical incident and crisis communications;
- Exceptional influencing skills, and strong negotiation, communication and presentation skills;
- Fluent written and spoken English, one or more additional languages preferred;
- Experience in working effectively to very tight deadlines and under stressful conditions, including supporting a dispersed team covering a 24/7 media cycle.
