ABOUT PIE:

The Pooled fund on International Energy (PIE) is an international grant making and strategy platform with a mission to secure a safe climate, clean air and prosperity through encouraging a just transition in the power and steel sectors.   

We work with charitable foundations and regional climate foundations to support a diverse set of research institutions, think tanks and civil society organisations working with governments, business and other parts of society all over the world. We aim to back local organisations and international partners to overcome the barriers to clean energy and steel.    

PIE was formed in 2013 and is hosted at the European Climate Foundation (ECF). CONTEXT OF THE ROLE:

The Head of Finance ensures PIE's financial health by managing financial systems and processes. This role involves working with PIE’s Leadership Team, ECF Finance Team, and other stakeholders to control budgets, manage cash flow, prepare budgets, develop forecasts, and maintain regulatory compliance. The Head of Finance reports to the Director of Operations.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Forecasting, Scenario Planning, & Risk Management

  • Develop and update forecasts based on internal and external scenarios and risks in collaboration with PIE team members.


Budget and Controlling

  • Develop and oversee annual budgets;

  • Monitor financial performance and provide strategic recommendations;

  • In partnership with ECF, implement financial controls and processes to safeguard PIE’s financial assets;

  • Collaborate with program and grants teams to ensure clear allocations across programs;

  • Oversee day-to-day finance administrative tasks such as invoice and expense approvals and disbursement.


Cash Flow Management

  • Design and implement processes for managing cash flow;

  • Forecast cash requirements and manage liquidity;

  • Work closely with the ECF Finance Team to optimize cash management practices.


Grant Compliance

  • Produce reports that reflect underspend, overspend, or delayed disbursements for project and program monitoring purposes and identifying financial risks per grantee and per program.


Compliance and Reporting

  • Stay updated on relevant regulations, tax laws, and reporting requirements;

  • Prepare financial reports for internal and external stakeholders including funders and the PIE Steering Committee;

  • Coordinate audits and compliance reviews.


Stakeholder Engagement

  • Engage with ECF, Leadership Team, Programme Team, Grants Team, Funders, and other stakeholders to understand their financial needs and develop solutions and trainings to meet those needs;

  • Provide financial insights for data-driven decision-making;

  • Foster a collaborative and transparent approach to financial management.


Financial System & Process Development Oversight

  • Ensure finance systems are fit for purpose;

  • Develop clear financial and compliance processes;

  • Create user-friendly documentation for team and partners.


REQUIREMENTS:

  • Self-starter: Proactive and able to self-motivate on tasks; Can operate autonomously;

  • Analytical: Uses data and logic to identify problems and make decisions; Loves numbers;

  • Collaborative: Reaches out to internal and external stakeholders to establish an overall collaborative environment;

  • Organized: Sets and focuses on key priorities; Stays well aware of all to-do-‘s and deadlines;

  • Clear communicator: Seeks to figure out how to best communicate with people across cultures and needs; adjusts communication style to fit stakeholders;

  • Innovative: Seeks to improve processes and set up automations to make the organization more efficient;

  • 8+ years of relevant professional experience, including budgeting, cash flow management, audit, financial reporting and compliance;

  • Degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field;

  • Familiar with statutory regulations across multiple geographies;

  • Excellent English communication skills in English (additional languages are a plus);

  • Experience configuring and managing financial processes, policies, and tools;

  • Basic understanding of grantmaking or philanthropy;

  • A passion for climate action and a commitment to PIE’s mission.
