BACKGROUND:

Friends of the Earth Europe (FoEE) campaigns at the heart of Europe for sustainable and just societies and for the protection of the environment. We are the largest grassroots environmental network in Europe, uniting 33 national organisations with thousands of local groups as part of Friends of the Earth International. Our vision is of a peaceful and sustainable world, founded on social, economic, racial, gender and environmental justice and free from all forms of domination and exploitation. FoEE is funded through grants from the European institutions, foundations and membership fees.

The second task to be carried out is part of the project Green-Paths which addresses the complex and multi-dimensional nature of the green transitions (supported by the European Commission under the Horizon-Cl2-2022-Transformations-02 – A sustainable future for Europe II), a three-year initiative ending in December 2026.

PURPOSE OF THE CONTRACT:

In the context of the project, we require assistance with two quite different jobs. Our ideal candidate would complete both. However, if you believe you are uniquely suited and motivated for only one of them, we invite you to apply for that task exclusively.

Annual Review of Friends of the Earth Europe

Friends of the Earth Europe yearly publishes its Annual Review in online and pdf format – this publication aims at highlighting our member groups’ and our Brussels campaigners’ successes to our civil society network and funders. We would like to update our concept for the 2024 and make it more attractive. The consultant will develop the new concept and deliver the 2024 Annual Review – including writing copy, doing basic layout and web design.

  • Outcome: We publish a shiny new Annual Review in May that puts our members’ and campaigners’ achievements in the spotlight and attracts different audiences;

  • Timeline: February – May 2025.

GreenPaths civil society workshop in Brussels

In the framework of the pan-European project GreenPaths, focused on a just transition on the ground, we will organise a one-day workshop in Brussels with 30 to 40 representatives of civil society organisations from at least 10 countries from across the region.

The consultant will lead on designing the program of the day and on organising logistics – with support and collaboration from project partners.

  • Outcome: A fruitful, smoothly coordinated civil society gathering in July with good participation from diverse civil society groups – and a report documenting the event;

  • Timeline: Preparation starting asap, event in July 2025.

PROFILE:

Expertise, experiences, and skills

Essential

  • Project management: Ability to make detailed plans, manage timelines, and deliver high-quality outputs, particularly for publications and events;

  • Communications and design: Demonstrated skills in developing engaging publication formats, including web and PDF formats, with innovative and visually appealing concepts;

  • Event organisation: Experience in planning and delivering civil society workshops or similar events, including handling logistics, participant coordination, and programme development;

  • Partner coordination: Experience working with diverse partners, particularly in the NGO or civil society sector;

  • Editing and copywriting: Near-native proficiency in English and the ability to produce clear and compelling materials;

  • Digital tools: Advanced Canva and WordPress skills.

Desired

  • Familiarity with civil society organisations and networks across Europe, particularly regarding just transition and environmental campaigns;

  • Good understanding of topics related to the green transition and just transition policies;

  • Familiarity with producing materials aimed at engaging funders and demonstrating impact;

  • Proficiency in French;

  • Experience with organising events in Brussels.

CONTRACT DETAILS:

The contract signed between Foee and the consultant is subject to the Grant Agreement signed between Foee and the European Commission. For both tasks combined, we have max. 10,000 EUR excl. VAT available.

Payment of the fees defined in the contract will be made in two instalments dependent on the expert carrying out the relevant stages of work as listed above:

  • A first instalment amounting to 50%, issued after the contract signature and the submission of a duly filled-in invoice;

  • A second instalment for the remaining payment issued after completion, delivery, and approval by FoEE of the final outcomes upon submission of a duly filled-in invoice. Payments will be done by bank transfers to a bank account for which the consultant  will communicate the full details.

The contractual agreement is based upon and regulated by the European Commission’s rules, provisions and requirements as set out in the project agreement with the European Commission, DG Environment and applicable Belgian law. The consultant is obliged to fulfil the described tasks and duties of work to receive the final payment according to the contract.

Foee has the right, based on Belgian Law, to terminate the contract when the consultant cannot perform the agreed tasks and duties accordingly. Any conflicts of interests or disputes concerning the validity of this arrangement, the construction of its terms, and the interpretation of the rights and duties of the parties in the contract shall be governed by Belgian Law.

The contract may not be transferred without the parties’ written agreement.

SELECTION AND AWARD CRITERIA:

The Consultant is selected according to the standards of selection that have been developed by FoEE. Main selection criteria are the expertise and capacity to deliver the work tendered for, the price-quality relation, the methodological quality and the tenderer’s work experience.

The contract will be awarded to the tenderer whose offer ensures the best value for money and no conflict of interest, considering the following criteria:
